What Summer Does to Your Skin After 40 (and Why SPF Isn't Enough)

You wore the SPF. You reapplied, most days. You did everything summer skincare told you to.


So why, by late August, do the fine lines look a little deeper, the glow looks more like dryness, and your skin somehow looks older than it did in June?


This is not a failure of your sunscreen. Summer is one of the most ageing seasons for your skin, and the reason has very little to do with getting burnt. It has almost everything to do with what is happening to your collagen underneath. SPF matters, but it was never built to do the whole job.

We like to blame time for how our skin ages. The research tells a different story.


In a widely cited 2013 study of nearly 300 women, dermatology researchers found that ultraviolet (UV) exposure appears responsible for around 80% of visible facial ageing signs: wrinkles, loss of firmness, and uneven pigmentation. Most of what we read as "getting older" in the mirror is, to a large degree, accumulated sun exposure rather than the calendar.


One honest caveat. That 80% is a population estimate from lighter-skinned women in a very sunny region, not a precise prediction for any one person. The broader point holds across decades of research: the sun is the biggest changeable driver of how old skin looks. You cannot change your genes. You can change your sun exposure.


And the season when that exposure climbs is summer.

What UV does to your collagen

Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm, plump and elastic. Picture it as the scaffolding beneath the surface. UV radiation damages that scaffolding in two ways at the same time.


First, it triggers enzymes that break collagen down. When UV hits the skin it creates oxidative stress, which switches on a family of enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The main one, collagenase, cuts existing collagen fibres apart.


Second, it slows the building of new collagen. UV exposure also suppresses your skin's normal collagen production, so you are not replacing what you lose.


Break down more, build less. Repeated over a summer of beach days, terrace lunches and school runs, that imbalance shows up months later as looser, more lined, less resilient skin. Dermatologists call it photoaging, or photoageing in British spelling.


The delay is the frustrating part. The collagen damage from July does not appear in July. It builds up and shows itself later, which is why summer skin protection is a long game rather than a same-day one.
 

Why skin after 40 is more vulnerable

If the sun seems to affect your skin more now than it did in your twenties, you are right.


Two things are happening underneath. Your natural collagen production has been slowly declining since your mid-twenties, by roughly 1% a year. By your forties you are already working with a thinner scaffold before summer even begins.


The bigger factor is hormonal. Oestrogen helps maintain skin collagen, and as levels fall through perimenopause and menopause, collagen loss speeds up. Research suggests women can lose a large share of their skin collagen in the first years after menopause alone.


So after 40 you have less collagen to start with, you are losing it faster, and summer UV is actively degrading what remains. The tan-and-look-great routine from your thirties stops working because the biology underneath has changed.
 

The summer double hit: it's not just the sun

UV is the headline, but summer piles on other stressors, and most of them attack your skin's ability to hold water:

 

  • Heat and sweat disrupt the skin's surface and increase water loss.
  • Air conditioning pulls humidity out of the air, and out of your skin, for hours a day.
  • Chlorine and salt water break down the skin's protective barrier, leaving it drier and more reactive.
  • Longer days outdoors mean more cumulative UV, even on the days you are not sunbathing.


Dehydrated, barrier-stressed skin looks older and defends itself less well against the UV doing the collagen damage. Summer is really two problems at once: a defence problem and a rebuild problem. Keep that in mind, because it points to what actually helps.

Astaxanthin: the antioxidant most women have never heard of

What does astaxanthin do for skin? It helps skin withstand the oxidative stress UV creates, and unusually for an antioxidant, it accumulates in skin tissue where that stress happens.


If UV damages collagen by creating oxidative stress, then supporting your skin's antioxidant defences from the inside should help it cope. One under-the-radar ingredient does exactly that: astaxanthin.


Astaxanthin is a deep-red antioxidant made by microalgae. It is what gives salmon and flamingos their pink colour. It is also one of the most potent antioxidants studied in skin research, and unlike many, it builds up in skin tissue, where UV stress happens.


In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, people taking 4 mg of astaxanthin a day showed better resistance to UV-induced skin stress. Their skin tolerated more UV before turning red, and lost less moisture in UV-exposed areas than the placebo group. They also reported smoother skin with better texture.


It is one of the more interesting ingredients in skin longevity, and a good match for what summer skin is up against.
 

Please don't call astaxanthin "internal sunscreen"

Now the scientist has to overrule the founder for a moment. You will see astaxanthin sold as "internal sunscreen" all over the internet. That framing is wrong, and it can be dangerous.

 

Astaxanthin does not block UV rays. It does not replace SPF. It does not let you stay out longer or skip protection. What it appears to do is help your skin withstand and recover from the oxidative stress caused by the UV that still reaches it.

 

A simple comparison: sunscreen is the umbrella that keeps most of the rain off. Antioxidant support from inside helps you dry off and recover from the drops that get through. You need both, and the umbrella comes first. Anyone selling a supplement as a reason to wear less sunscreen is selling you something that can harm your skin.

 

So wear your SPF, every day, and especially in summer. Then support your skin from the inside, because SPF on its own does not rebuild the collagen summer costs you.

The two jobs your summer skin actually needs

Everything above points to a simple two-part approach for skin after 40 in summer.


Defend. Reduce the oxidative damage UV causes, on the surface with SPF and antioxidants, and from within with antioxidant support such as astaxanthin and vitamin C.


Rebuild. Actively replace the collagen being broken down, rather than only slowing the loss.


Most skincare handles the first job, and only on the surface. Very little handles the second, the actual rebuilding of collagen from within. For skin that already makes less collagen every year, rebuilding is the part that matters most.

The story we tell ourselves about ageing skin, that it is just time catching up, lets the real cause off the hook. Most of what ages your face is sun, and summer is when that damage concentrates. After 40, with collagen already falling and hormones speeding up the loss, the stakes are higher.
