The role of collagen in skin ageing
Skin Longevity basics
Most conversations around skin ageing acknowledge collagen loss, but few explore what it really means, or the solutions available to address it. Collagen is the body’s primary structural protein which forms the scaffolding which gives skin its firmness, elasticity and smooth texture.
Unfortunately, from our mid-20s, natural collagen production begins to decline by about 1% each year, accelerating in our 40s, and compounded by external stressors such as UV exposure and oxidative damage.
This combination of slowed production and increased breakdown weakens the skin’s internal structure, leading to visible signs of ageing.
-
Collagen is one of the most vital structural proteins in the body, responsible for keeping skin firm, elastic, and resilient. Yet most collagen supplements fail to deliver meaningful results - not because collagen doesn’t work, but because it only works if it's provided in a form that the body can actually use.
Traditional collagen products often rely on hydrolysed animal collagen: large protein fragments that must be broken down and absorbed before they can be used by the body. While these peptides can provide raw materials, their biological impact is limited as the body doesn’t automatically recognise them as a signal to produce more collagen, and in many cases, they are diverted to other functions like general protein metabolism, offering little benefit to the skin.
A peer-reviewed study published in Nature’s npj Aging confirms this gap: for collagen renewal to occur, the body requires specific amino acids, in a precise ratio, delivered with the correct biological signal. To effectively trigger collagen synthesis, three elements are essential:
- Precise amino acids:
Collagen is primarily built from three key amino acids: glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. These must be delivered in the right ratio and form to be recognised as collagen-building material. Generic protein or random peptides won’t achieve the same result. - A biological signal to activate production
Collagen is produced by fibroblasts, which are specialised skin cells that require a biological signal to initiate synthesis. Without this signal, the body has no reason to begin building new collagen, even if the raw materials are present. - Cofactors that stabilise and support synthesis
Nutrients such as vitamin C and Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) are essential for the enzymatic processes that link collagen fibres and stabilise the matrix. Without them, collagen strands remain weak, disorganised, and prone to breakdown.
When these components are missing or imbalanced, the body lacks both the building blocks and the biological instructions needed to produce strong, stable collagen. This is where many supplements fall short - they may supply fragments but fail to engage the skin’s natural regeneration process.
- Precise amino acids:

Most formulas in the collagen supplement space are built on the assumption that simply consuming animal-derived collagen peptides will lead to collagen renewal. In reality, this approach does not account for how the body actually processes collagen.
A peer-reviewed study published in Nature’s npj Aging shows that collagen synthesis is far more efficiently supported by delivering a targeted blend of the three naturally occurring amino acids that form collagen - glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline - rather than whole collagen peptides.
In the study, this amino-acid composition stimulated natural collagen production up to four times more effectively than traditional animal-derived collagen.
Guided by these findings, and developed in collaboration with longevity scientists from ETH Zurich, the Collagen Activator features Colgevity™, our patented, 100% vegan collagen precursor designed to actively stimulate the body’s own collagen-building processes, together with added co-factors for deeper effects:
For replenishing diminishing collagen levels
The foundation of the formula is Colgevity™ - a patented vegan collagen precursor that provides the three key amino acids (glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) in the precise ratio needed for collagen synthesis. Unlike hydrolysed collagen, which is often broken down before reaching the skin, these building blocks are readily used by fibroblasts to produce new collagen more efficiently, thus helping restore skin volume, structure, and strength. For boosting skin elasticity & hydration
Acerola cherry extract, a potent natural source of vitamin C, supports collagen cross-linking and protects skin cells from oxidative damage. Together with Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) - a longevity compound that fuels cellular repair - this duo helps improve skin’s elasticity, promote smoother texture, and restore hydration balance at the structural level. For enhancing skin firmness and reducing fine lines
As collagen production slows, skin begins to lose its firmness and smooth appearance. The Collagen Activator works to restore dermal density by stimulating natural collagen synthesis and reducing inflammation - two critical processes for maintaining tone and preventing the formation of fine lines. The result: visibly firmer, more youthful-looking skin over time. For strengthening hair and nails
The Collagen Activator provides key amino acids such as Proline, which not only support collagen formation but also contribute to the structure of keratin-rich tissues like hair and nails. Combined with nutrients that enhance tissue repair and integrity, it promotes visibly stronger, less brittle nails and thicker, shinier hair, thus offering a holistic approach to beauty and structural health. -
Collagen is essential for maintaining skin firmness, elasticity, and structure, but supporting skin longevity doesn’t stop at collagen production alone.
Our Collagen Activator is designed to stimulate collagen synthesis directly at the source using Colgevity™, a patented vegan precursor that delivers the exact amino acids needed to form new collagen. Combined with key cofactors like Acerola Cherry (Vitamin C), Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG), and Astaxanthin, it helps reactivate the skin’s natural ability to rebuild its internal scaffolding - thus restoring firmness, improving texture, and strengthening hair and nails over time.
SkinSpan™, on the other hand, addresses what causes collagen to break down in the first place. As the skin barrier weakens with age, moisture loss increases, cell renewal slows, and collagen becomes more vulnerable to breakdown. SkinSpan™ reinforces the skin barrier, restores deep hydration, and supports regenerative turnover – creating the ideal conditions for preserving collagen and enhancing the effects of collagen-boosting interventions.
Together, these formulas offer a comprehensive approach to skin longevity:
- Collagen Activator supports collagen production and structural renewal
- SkinSpan™ preserves existing collagen, repairs the skin barrier, and promotes healthy skin regeneration
By combining both, you address not just one part of the skin ageing equation, but all of it, thus helping your skin stay firm, smooth, and resilient over time.
While improved collagen levels are essential for maintaining skin firmness, elasticity, and structure, preserving existing collagen is just as important as producing more of it.

Traditional collagen supplements typically use hydrolysed animal collagen - large protein fragments that must be digested before the body can use them. While they provide generic amino acids, they do not reliably activate collagen production and often lack the biological signals and cofactors needed for true collagen synthesis.
Our Collagen Activator has been developed based on breakthrough research conducted at ETH Zurich and now published in Natures npj Aging, where scientists have discovered a more effective way to replenish the body's natural collagen levels. It features Colgevity™ - our patented, 100% vegan collagen precursor that delivers the exact three amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) in the precise 3:1:1 ratio shown in the peer-reviewed study, clinically proven to be up to 4x more effective than standard collagen peptides.
To support full collagen synthesis, the formula also includes essential cofactors such as Vitamin C, AKG, and Astaxanthin, which help stabilize collagen fibres, fuel cellular repair, and protect the skin from oxidative stress. It is a clean, toxins and sugar-free formula, naturally sweetened with Stevia, and made with traceable, clinically dosed ingredients for maximum effectiveness.

The Collagen Activator is designed to help rebuild and maintain the structural proteins that give your skin its firmness, smoothness, and elasticity. Rather than just replacing collagen with generic peptides, it supports your body’s natural ability to produce more collagen - resulting in visibly firmer skin, fewer fine lines, and improved hydration.
It also strengthens hair and nails, thanks to its amino acid-rich formula and targeted micronutrients that support keratin production and tissue repair. It’s a holistic formula designed not just for beauty, but for skin health and longevity.
In an observational human trial with 58 participants (39 women and 19 men), users reported noticeably healthier, more radiant skin within just a few weeks. After only 30 days, 97% noticed an improvement in overall skin quality, and 83% experienced better skin hydration, clear signs of enhanced skin function and moisture balance.

Collagen plays a critical role in maintaining skin structure, elasticity, and resilience. As collagen levels decline with age, the skin begins to lose firmness and moisture, leading to fine lines, dullness, and sagging.
The Collagen Activator helps reverse this decline by supplying the exact building blocks (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline) in the right ratio, while also activating fibroblasts - the skin cells responsible for collagen production. Ingredients such as Astaxanthin protect the skin from oxidative damage, and AKG fuels cellular repair. Together, they help rebuild the skin’s internal scaffolding for a firmer, smoother, and more radiant complexion over time.
